Research for AASHTO Standing Committee on Highways. Task 411. Review and Update of AASHTO Standard Practice R 87

Measurement of pavement rutting using automated equipment has evolved over the years from that acquired from a simple 3-point or 5-point measurement to that estimated from the analysis of a transverse profile consisting of more than 1,000 elevation points across the pavement surface. This technological advancement has enabled a relatively accurate 3-D measure of the transverse pavement surface. AASHTO R 87-18, Standard Practice for Determining Pavement Deformation Parameters and Cross Slope from Collected Transverse Profiles (formerly AASHTP PP 69), outlines methods for deriving pavement deformation parameters such as rut depth and cross slope in pavement surfaces from the transverse profile. Although this standard practice (and its predecessor) has been in use for several years, it has not been critically reviewed and updated based on field experience. The research reviewed and evaluated the provisions of AASHTO R087 standard practice pertaining to rutting and cross slope, and recommended changes. A proposed revised version of the AASHTO standard practice has been prepared for consideration by the AASHTO Committee on Materials and Pavements, and incorporation into the AASHTO Standard Specifications for Transportation Materials and Methods of Sampling and Testing.
