Investigate the effects of V2X technologies for automated vehicles using virtual simulation and driving simulator experiments
The proposed project aims to conduct virtual simulation experiments based on crash report analysis and the results from previous driving simulator experiments. In 2019, the University of Central Florida (UCF) team conducted a driving simulator experiment for the project entitled “Assessing the Effectiveness of Connected Vehicle Technologies based on Driving Simulator Experiments,” which was funded by SAFER-SIM. In some of the scenarios, a pedestrian suddenly darted out behind a parked vehicle. In this situation, since the pedestrian is occluded by the parked vehicles, drivers may not be able conduct avoidance maneuvers in time to avoid crashes. In this project, critical roadway infrastructure designs or situations for vulnerable road users’ related crashes will be identified through reviewing crash reports’ narratives. Selected scenarios will be evaluated in virtual simulation platform in order to investigate the safety conditions under automated vehicle environment. The effectiveness of automated vehicle technologies will be evaluated by the virtual simulation.
