Passive Strain Sensing Based on Changes in Retro reflectivity

Objective of the Research: To develop, test, and demonstrate an innovative passive strain sensor made from RRSM for use in structural monitoring of transportation infrastructure. The work will lead to development of an inexpensive, easy to use, strain sensing/monitoring system that uses materials and tools DOTs typically have and are familiar with. It will provide the Figure 3. Measured strain-vs-RR from preliminary study capability to quickly/easily monitor strains and cracks in civil transportation systems. Because it will be based on using existing materials and tools that DOT crews already have and are trained to use, the transfer of technology will be smooth and seamless. Furthermore, the application of the technology can be done without the need to hire an expensive consultant
