Performance of Corroded Piles Subjected to Eccentric Loads Before and After Repair
Seven-hundred bridges in Missouri need some type of H-pile maintenance and repair at an estimated cost of $20M. Of those, 220 bridges suffered from pile section losses and 80 bridge suffered from quite severe section losses that are enough to limit traffic loads. In previous research by the PI, the concentric axial capacity of corroded H-piles was determined. Furthermore, different repair options were proposed. While the previous testing focused on axially loaded piles, a typical H-pile is subjected to an eccentric load during its service life. Literature included only three corroded piles that were subjected to eccentric loads. Eccentricity caused a severe reduction in the capacity of the investigated piles such reduction was quite significant for severely corroded piles compared to uncorroded piles. Furthermore, the investigated repaired piles were not investigated under eccentric loads. Therefore, there is a need for investigating corroded and repaired piles under eccentric loads. This project will investigate the performance of ten corroded full-scale H-piles subjected to 10% and 30% eccentric axial load. One-half of the piles will be tested as corroded piles while the second one-half will be tested as repaired piles. The force deformation of the investigated piles will be determined. Furthermore, the performance of the tested piles will be carefully examined using high-fidelity finite element models.
