Clear Roads II: Standard Test Procedures for Ice Melting Capacity of Deicers

This project is needed to ensure the money spent on winter maintenance chemicals returns a reasonable expectation of performance and will provide agencies with a laboratory test method to be able to compare relative performance of deicers to rationalize procurement costs consistent with level of service requirements. To this end, the project will: (1) first run laboratory tests consistent with the as-written mechanical rocker test; identify potential modifications and consult the project subcommittee with a web-meeting; and then orchestrate within- and between-laboratory round robin testing; (2) draft a standard test procedure in the American Association of State and Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO) format and share with the appropriate AASHTO committee/subcommittee; and (3) address AASHTO comments and provide balloting assistance, as needed, in order to establish an AASHTO standard test procedure that will provide consistent, comparable deicer performance in terms of ice melting.
