Bench-marking Non-motorized Policies and Project Delivery
Installing safe, accessible, and cost-effective bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure can yield a host of public health and environmental benefits, at multiple scales. In North Carolina (NC) and other states, successfully funding, permitting, and installing such infrastructure requires coordination among local, state, and federal government actors. Projects of such institutional complexity benefit from clearly articulated standards, which can be informed by best management practices, policies, and laws already in place around the United States (US). The Research Team proposes a broad, multi-methodological study that assesses state-level best management practices for the funding, designing, permitting, and installation of both independent non-motorized vehicle infrastructure and non-motorized vehicle infrastructure along highways.
