Effective Selection of Crosswalk Patterns
The proposed topic for this Pedestrian and Bicycle TPF study is an evaluation of the safety, cost, and effectiveness of various crosswalk marking types. Pedestrian safety at controlled and uncontrolled intersections is broadly a concern for transportation officials, evidenced in part by the large body of work dedicated to this topic, yet practitioners are still looking for additional guidance on the crosswalk marking types, and overall pedestrian safety at crossings. This study will assess previous work on this topic, identify and study any gaps, and develop a guide to selecting crosswalk markings based on the safety, cost, and overall effectiveness of those patterns.
