Development of Bridge Load Testing Program for Load Rating of Concrete Bridges

The National Bridge Inspection Standards mandate that all bridges should be subjected to regular inspection and load rating. The American Association for State Highway and Transportation Officials Manual for Bridge Evaluation outlines different methods for bridge rating. Previous field investigations revealed that rating analysis often yields extremely conservative factors. To avoid imposing unnecessary extreme load restrictions on bridges, bridge load testing has been adopted by states as a viable and cost-effective alternative for assessing the true capacity of bridges. This project will focus on promoting and adopting this effective technique in Illinois.
