Evaluation of Geogrids for Asphalt Pavement Construction

Geogrids have been used in several TxDOT Districts to reinforce Hot-Mix Asphalt (HMA) with the objective of minimizing reflective cracking. Recent field evaluations have revealed that polymeric geogrids within HMA resulted in an additional promising benefit; increasing structural capacity and consequently reducing the required thickness of hot-mix overlays. Despite strong field evidence, important questions remain concerning proper geogrid selection criteria for this new application, what properties to specify, and how to quantify the increased structural capacity. Researchers will evaluate different types of polymeric and glass geogrids; instrument field test sections along State Highway 21 (SH21) to validate constructability and assess long-term field performance; and translate the research findings into practical specifications.
