Determining an Acceptable California Bearing Ratio (CBR) Value for Kansas Subgrades Based on Pavement Distress Data
The main objective of this study is to provide engineering science based evaluation related to the acceptability of a CBR value of 5 as a lower limit for existing Kansas subgrade soils and provide recommendations for what the acceptable CBR value should be. This will be accomplished by conducting extensive statistical analyses for which all the above data will be used including: 1) initial pavement layers present along with layer thicknesses and surface treatment procedures to date, 2) cumulative ESAL’s from initial construction to the time DCP test data was taken, 3) core analysis at the locations of DCP tests, and 4) historical surface distress data for the existing pavement segments. In addition, historical soil data available at the KDOT will be reviewed. It is anticipated that subgrade classification (USCS and/or Kansas), grain size distribution, Atterberg limits (if applicable), moisture and mass density will be available. Soil classification will be useful to establish a correlation between the DCP/CBR, pavement distress, pavement type, and soil type.
