K-12 Outreach Program Development in Partnership with the Science Center of Iowa

In an effort to better prepare students for skilled, post-secondary education and 21st century skills, the State of Iowa recently adopted the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) to replace the Iowa Common Core in science education with implementation to begin in the 2018-19 school year. NGSS focuses on crosscutting concepts that are proven to help students explore different connections among four main domains of science, which includes Physical Science, Life Science, Earth and Space Science and Engineering Design. By immersing classroom lessons into these crosscutting concepts, students are able to better develop a coherent and scientifically-based view of the world around them. With a focus on science and engineering practices, students are able to combine ways scientists investigate the natural world around them with methods engineers use to design and build systems. For students, the newly adopted NGSS encourages the development of key skills such as communication, collaboration, inquiry, problem solving and flexibility in assignments. For educators, it gives flexibility to design classroom learning experiences that stimulate student's interests while developing an in-depth understanding of content. As a strong partner with formal education, the Science Center of Iowa (SCI) has provided several opportunities for professional development for educators as well as science education programming around the state with the Science at Your Site program. With the adoption of NGSS, educators across the state will be looking to SCI for support in incorporating ways to engage their class in student-centered, inquiry-based learning opportunities.
