Performance of Existing ABC Projects – Inspection Case Studies (University of Washington)
Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) projects are, by definition, constructed more rapidly that those that use conventional techniques. The rapid construction confers benefits on the traveling public, and on businesses, primarily by virtue of the reduction in delays. However, it is appropriate to ask whether the faster construction also carries hidden disadvantages, such as a shorter service life and greater fragility and susceptibility to damage or corrosion. The overall goal of the proposed research is to investigate the long-term performance of projects that were constructed in the past using ABC methods, and therefore to determine whether the short-term benefits of ABC are matched by good long-term performance as well. This will be done by selecting two ABC bridges in Washington State and using them as indicators of others. Washington State was one of the first to adopt the use of precast, prestressed concrete girders, and so offers the opportunity to review a long history of that type of construction. The results will be reported in a format suitable for inclusion in a course module on ABC.
