Wrong-Way Crash Prevention on Arizona's Highways

Crashes caused by wrong-way driving (WWD) on highways are of increasing concern to the public, the media, and the government. Such crashes often occur at high speeds are are difficult for right-way drivers to avoid. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has made progress in developing detection and warning systems for wrong-way driving, having deployed a pilot system along 15 miles of Interstate 17 in Phoenix. The system shows promise in detecting wrong-way drivers and warning the public, but does not stop a vehicle from entering the highway from the wrong direction. Appropriate technologies for stopping vehicles from driving the wrong way are likely to be complex and based on multi-phased research. This study will advance the state of knowledge as a first step toward safely stopping WWD and preventing crashes. The study will give ADOT a better understanding of products, technologies, and practices for stopping wrong-way vehicles. The study also will determine the extent of compatibility with ADOT's existing detection/warning system. This understanding will help ADOT determine future steps.
