Design and Detailing Requirements for Columns under Collision TR-768
Truck/train collision with bridge piers are among the extreme events that have caused significant safety and performance concerns. Collision-induced forces can result in a drastic loss of the load-bearing capacity of a column, leading to the collapse of individual bridge components, or even the entire bridge in certain situations. A bridge failure due to collision not only imposes an immediate danger to the public safety, but also results in detrimental economic losses. The incurred monetary losses can be broadly classified to direct and indirect costs. Direct costs originate from the bridge closure, immediate repair activities, and traffic disruptions. However, if the failed bridge is a critical component of a highway network, the consequences of traffic disruption can be extended to the entire community in the form indirect costs, resulting from detours, traffic delays, and freight transportation difficulties. Buth et al. documented multiple collision events in the United States, in some of which the pier loss had led to the collapse of the bridge superstructure, closure of both overpass and underpass, and socio-economic losses that had been extended beyond the physical boundaries of the bridge impacted by the truck/train. Although vehicle collision to a bridge column is deemed to be a rare event, it has been reported as one of the top three major causes of bridge failure in the United States.
