Update NHTSA’s Drugs and Human Performance Fact Sheets

In 2000 a panel of international experts on drug-impaired driving met to review developments in the field of drugs and human performance; to identify the specific effects that both illicit and prescription drugs have on driving, and to develop guidance for when dealing with drug-impaired driving problems. The resulting "Drugs and Human Performance Fact Sheets" presented the conclusions of the panel and included the state of scientific knowledge in the area of drugs and human performance for the prescription and illegal drugs selected for evaluation. Since its publication, there has been an increasing interest about the effects of a wider variety of drugs on driving performance. An updated and enhanced version of the Fact Sheets would be beneficial for law enforcement officers, prosecutors, toxicologists, and local officials as they seek to develop policies, and to detect, arrest, and prosecute unsafe drivers. This project will update and expand the 2004 Fact Sheets to include new topic areas for each selected drug and to expand the number of drugs described. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is also considering the development of a mobile-friendly version that users can access quickly and easily obtain information in the Fact Sheets from a computer, smartphone, or tablet. The resulting information from this project will provide accurate, up-to-date, and easy-to-use information on drugs of concern to the traffic safety community.
