Exploration of Ultrasound for the Evaluation and Preservation of Structures TR-757
Recent developments in nondestructive testing technology have opened the door for innovative inspection methods for infrastructure. One such technology is ultrasound evaluation, specifically in the form of linear arrays. A device, called MIRA, which implements this technology was recently acquired by Iowa State for use in a separate research project regarding the evaluation of pavements. The availability of this tool allows for exploration of other uses of the technology, including inspection and evaluation of bridges and structures. The research team proposes a multi-use investigation of MIRA to determine applicability and advantageous implementation scenarios for the inspection and preservation of bridges and structures. The objectives of the proposed research are to: (1) Explore innovative applications of MIRA for bridges and structures. Based upon input from department of transportation (DOT) staff, inspection scenarios will be explored using MIRA. Possible applications include reinforcement condition determination, damage extent, and anomaly detection. It is anticipated that multiple situations will be investigated based upon the proposed budget. (2) Determine advantageous capabilities based upon input from the DOT. Ongoing results and findings will be shared with the advisory committee as situations are explored, allowing for input and direction of future efforts. Advantageous applications will be identified for further exploration.
