Stormwater Runoff Monitoring and Analysis for Aviation Mode Facilities
Airports in North Carolina have to comply with stormwater regulations. Preliminary stormwater sampling data collected at Wilmington International Airport (ILM) suggest that runoff from portions of the airport property may be similar in quality to Low Impact Development (LID) sites. Green infrastructure techniques utilized at airports include the disconnection of impervious surfaces (namely, the runway and taxiway), where runoff flows over large vegetative swales and buffers. This project proposes to examine two additional airports located in a non-sandy part of the state (tentatively: Burlington-Alamance Regional Airport (BUY), and Smith-Reynolds Airport (INT) in Winston-Salem) to evaluate the runoff potential. The assessment will be based upon hydrology (volume and peak rates) and water quality (pollutant concentrations and loads) leaving different land uses (e.g., runway, ramp, taxiway, vegetated treatment areas). The results collected herein can potentially be compared to LID sites monitored in the Piedmont of NC.
