State of Knowledge on Pedestrian and Bicyclist Safety

NHTSA often prepares literature reviews on behavioral safety topics. These State of Knowledge (SOK) reviews are critical for updating knowledge of an issue. They also serve as resources in traffic safety, including for other federal agencies, state governments, advocates, researchers, and the public. Many become significant reference documents. This will be NHTSA’s first SOK report on pedestrian and bicyclist safety. This literature review will comprehensively scan the literature, obtain and compile necessary documents, critically review documents, and objectively synthesize the research – drawing conclusions that allow a solid understanding of the topic and provide a basis for sound policy decisions. It will consist of an executive summary and multiple stand-alone chapters that cover various aspects of pedestrian and bicyclist safety. The executive summary will include general statistics and encompass highlights of individual chapters.
