Investigation of KY-for-Hire Requirements
Interstate and intrastate for‐hire motor carriers must have Kentucky intrastate for‐hire authority if they plan to pick up and drop off the same cargo in Kentucky (unless they are hauling an exempt commodity). This requirement does not apply to the intrastate transport of household goods or passengers. Administrators in the Department of Vehicle Regulation are investigating whether to eliminate the Ky.‐for‐hire operating authority. The renewal is labor intensive and difficult for Kentucky State Police to enforce. Eliminating the credential could create unintended consequences it was intended to prevent. Transportation Cabinet officials need a thorough evaluation of their options for intrastate operating authority.
