Longer service Life Bridge Coatings (New & Maintenance)
Protective coating systems for new bridges typically last 25 to 30 years without significant maintenance or needing replacement. Maintaining protective coating systems for steel bridges requires extensive resources. The coatings currently used are not sufficient to provide the long‐term protection required. Combing two protective coating methods could meet the need— Hot Dipped Galvanizing (HDG) with a top coat (Duplex system). The KY Transportation Cabinet maintains over 1,000 steel bridges, which means that 50 bridges per year must be painted to maintain their protective coating. New information, tools, and materials have been developed which would allow a protective coating system to be applied for a longer service life.
