Training Curricula for Highway Professionals
A transportation agency's success depends on its employees’ ability to work toward and achieve organizational goals and objectives. To help its employees succeed and ensure that assets are managed and new projects delivered, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is committed to employee professional development training. Professional development helps employees acquire new skills and build expertise, which translates to improved job performance. While the Cabinet offers many professional development and training opportunities, no comprehensive training curricula have been developed to guide professionals and paraprofessionals and ensure that the Cabinet maintains key competencies. Mastering subject‐specific technical competencies of a particular occupational specialty is necessary for an employee to become a skilled professional or paraprofessional. Letting employees simply pass through a sequence of substandard or unrelated training courses is not an appropriate framework to ensure professional growth. The kind of training an employee receives will depend on their disciplinary specialty. The objectives of this research are to: 1) Identify the requisite technical competencies and professional development goals for professionals and paraprofessionals, and 2) Create training curricula that are applicable to various subject areas.
