Clear Roads: Accumulated Winter Season Severity Index (AWSSI) Enhancements in Support of Winter Road Maintenance
The Accumulated Winter Season Severity Index (AWSSI) is a simple and straightforward tool that was developed by the University using non-proprietary data that is available from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for numerous locations within each state, nationwide. This is a publicly available, general index for winter severity (http://mrcc.isws.illinois.edu/research/awssi/indexAwssi.jsp). University will develop additional visual data representation tools that will allow comparing the current winter with past winter, viewing a likely range of projections for the current winter based on past winters and expanding the number of locations for which the AWSSI is calculated. In addition, University will investigate the feasibility of a modified AWSSI for snow and ice control that will provide a better correlation to winter maintenance costs and implement the modified index.
