Implementation of Low Temperature Cracking Criteria in Iowa

The objective of this study is to assess the low-temperature cracking resistance of asphalt mixtures used by the Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) and correlate the laboratory results with field performance. Based on the developed correlations, performance criteria for the DCT and SCB tests will be proposed. The study will also investigate the variability of the DCT and SCB test methods through an inter-laboratory study. The current specification for the disk-shaped compact tension test (ASTM D7313) is contained in IM510 and pertains to when binder replacement exceeds 30% for mixtures containing only RAP or 25% for mixtures containing recycled asphalt shingles. "The average of two specimens shall meet the following minimum fracture energy requirements tested at 10°C warmer than the low climatic temperature (normally specified as the low temperature performance grade: Very High Tramc (VT) - 690 J/m2; High Traffic (HT) - 460 11m2; Standard Traffic (ST) - 400 11m2". Research tasks include: Task 1 - Literature Review and Development of Experimental Plan; Task 2 - Selection of Laboratories for the Inter-laboratory Study; Task 3 - Identify Projects and collect field mixtures and test samples; Task 4 - Testing samples and monitoring of field performance; Task 5 - Preparation and testing of samples for the Inter-Laboratory Study (ILS); Task 6 - Analysis of results; and Task 7 - Final report.
