Bridge System Research for Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC)
California Department of Transportation's (Caltrans) has been developing and testing Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) components for many months. This has been in response to the Federal Highway Administration's desire to employ the many advantages of ABC compared to conventional cast-in-place (CIP) construction methods. Caltrans has been careful to include seismic aspects in all ABC element development. By mid 2014, Caltrans will be ready to combine the best results of seismically oriented component development into a complete bridge system to validate the functionality of various components in a complete ABC bridge system. Thorough analysis and testing of an entire bridge system will help obtain the benefits of ABC without any compromise in seismic performance.
