Expanding Mobile Terrestrial Laser Scanning (MTLS) Capability and Capacity throughout Caltrans
This research supports deploying the MX8 mobile laser scanner system on California Department of Transportation's (Caltrans') survey projects in Districts 1 through 4. The research develops and presents training materials to the central and southern (C/S) region Mobile Terrestrial Laser Scanning (MTLS) Technical Advisory Groups (TAG) and provides live training sessions with C/S district surveyors. The research initiates the MX8 deployment in C/S districts and performs case studies on Caltrans' MTLS projects. With Caltrans Office of Land Surveys' (OLS) guidance, a needs assessment will determine whether to share the MX8 throughout California or procure another MTLS system. MTLS specs will be developed and modified based on the MX8's field use and acquisition. The research evaluates the C/S districts’ Information Technology (IT) needs for MTLS post-processing and provides recommendations for IT infrastructure requirements.
