Calibration of LRFD Geotechnical Axial (Tension and Compression) Resistance Factor for Driven Piles and Drilled Shafts

Geotechnical resistance factors that are specified in Section 10 of California Amendments to American Association of State Highway ad Transportation Officials Load and Resistance Factor Design (AASHTO LRFD 2008 and 2011) have been developed based on resistance factors used in Load Factor Design (LFD) practice of California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), and also calibration for load factors used in LFD and LRFD practices. Although acceptable for a short transition period, such calibration needs to be improved to be consistent to LRFD methodology in designing foundations based on a uniform risk of failure and reliability index. Several parameters such as Quality Control (QC) and Quality Assurance (QA) measures that may be department-specific, as well as design assumptions that may be project specific need to be considered for an efficient calibration. This Task will use existing Caltrans pile load test data to develop LRFD resistance factors for driven piles and drilled shafts.
