Development of Safety Performance Functions for California -Type 2, Advanced

This study will highlight for the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) the value of roadway and roadside data inventories in the improvement of safety predictions for various crash types in addition to total crashes. This will in turn help the department develop targeted programs for injury prevention and reduction using sound geometric basis in addition to Average Daily Traffic (ADT) information. The long-term benefit of this approach is that the utility of roadway and roadside design data can provide insights into optimal design policies for Caltrans, while maintaining a progressive trajectory toward near-zero fatal targets on high-priority corridors on the state system.
