SPR-4113: Development of a Friction Performance Test for Compacted Asphalt Mixtures

Friction is important to assure safety for the traveling public. This project will predict pavement friction from small samples (cores or gyratory specimens) to predict friction for use as a mix design check and/or a construction quality parameter. A current Indiana test method (ITM) to approve new aggregate sources for field test sections (ITM 221) requires the fabrication of large slabs and is not feasible for use on small specimens. The deliverables include a draft ITM for a friction test method for small samples with associated data to support the method; and a draft performance‐based specification for asphalt pavement friction.
