Incorporating the Site Variability and Laboratory/In-situ Testing Variability of Soil Properties in Geotechnical Engineering Design

The main objective of this research is to evaluate the different sources of geotechnical variability and quantify the variability of soil properties for inclusion in the analysis and design of different geotechnical engineering systems. This generally includes evaluating operator-induced variations on design soil properties, evaluating equipment-induced variations on design soil properties, evaluating site/spatial variations of design soil properties, developing quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) guidelines for laboratories, and incorporating site variability and measurement error into load and resistance factor design (LRFD) geotechnical design.
