Development of Software for Analysis of Traffic Signal Support Structures

Structural Analysis of Traffic Signal Poles is a time-consuming and necessary process for engineers at the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT). This process is currently done manually and is inefficient. It is a benefit to the State of New York if this structural analysis could be performed by a standardized computer program to determine if a proposed load configuration can be supported by existing or new structure(s). The research for this contract shall be conducted by University Transportation Research Center (UTRC) member Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) hereafter referred to as the Consultant. The NYSDOT Project Manager (PM)/Technical Working Group (TWG) will be referred to as NYSDOT. The objective of this project is to develop a computer program to perform various load and stress analyses of existing and proposed Mast Arm and Span Wire pole installations (which checks all requirements of the latest American Association of State Highway an Transportation Offcials (AASHTO) Standard Specifications for Structural Supports for Highway Signs, Luminaires and Traffic Signals and NYSDOT Specifications) with the ability to enter an array of inputs at different locations including, but not limited to: traffic signal heads, backplates, overhead signs, traffic cameras, vehicle detectors, complex web wire spans, and multiple arms.
