Design of a Completely New Approach for a National Household-Based Long Distance Travel Survey Instrument

The objective of this exploratory research project is to push the boundary of the known research on survey methods to determine if significant gains in survey estimates can be achieved through the use of innovative techniques. More specifically, to address questions such as:  Can significant improvements be incurred in response rates through the adoption of advanced technology for capturing detailed survey information? Does new technology reduce or increase respondent burden when combined with other methods? What impact on estimates of long-distance travel (i.e., variability of survey estimates) would be incurred through the use of new techniques?
