Evaluation of Travel Demand Modeling Throughout Alabama Using Highway Performance Monitoring System Data

This project has two primary objectives: The first is to continue collecting Highway Performance Monitoring System (HPMS) traffic data on behalf of the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) for use in research activities. The second is to utilize the data collected under the current and previous University of Alabama (UA)-administered counting cycles to perform a detailed evaluation of the Travel Demand Models and procedures used by ALDOT and Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs) throughout the State. The UA will work with researchers at the University of Alabama-Huntsville (UAH) to conduct a detailed evaluation of the travel demand modeling practices in the State. The results of this work will be used to develop guidance on improving the model development (data collection, parameter estimation, etc.) for use in the suite of regional models currently in use by ALDOT and the MPOs around the State.
