Smartphone-based Solution to Monitor and Reduce Fuel Consumption and CO2 Footprint

The value of trajectory- or probe vehicle-based information is very well-known as such information allows accurate characterization of vehicle and traffic dynamics, which ultimately enable various mobility and environmental applications (e.g., ecorouting) to reduce Fuel Consumption (FC) and emissions. As smart-phone market is expanding rapidly, various applications supporting travelers' decision making have been developed (see a list of smartphone transportation applications at: http://www.itsa.org/knowledgecenter/marketdata- analysis/smartphone-apps). Most of these applications pertain to access or dissemination of traffic congestion information and transit schedules and routes. However, there is very limited work on investigating the use of smartphones for monitoring and providing emission and FC information. The overall goals of this project are to develop smartphone-based solutions to monitor and reduce FC and carbon dioxide (CO2) footprint and to provide feedback to a driver for a given multimodal trip.
