SPR-4040-I: Experimental Study of the Load Response of Large Diameter Closed-ended and Open-ended Pipe Piles Installed in Alluvial Soil (Phase I)
For the first time, INDOT is planning to use 24-inch open-ended pipe piles and closed-ended piles to support the piers and bents for the east-bound U.S. 52 bridge over the Wabash River. Open-ended pipe piles are easier to install, particularly in Indiana soils of glacial origin. This project aims to advance this knowledge through load-testing of an open-ended pile in connection with this bridge replacement project.
