Shear Behavior of Thin Prestressed Slab Beams In Bridges

A precast prestressed concrete (PPC) slab beam has been recognized as a good alternative to a fully cast-in-place (CIP) reinforced concrete (RC) slab beam in terms of constructability, cost effectiveness, structural performance, and maintenance. Accordingly, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) plans to add an 8 inch thick PPC slab beam up to 30 ft. long to its current 12 in. and 15 in. thick PPC slab beams spanning from 25 ft. to 50 ft. for creek crossing, especially on off-system roadways. There is concern whether the shear provision in current AASHTO LRFD code is cost-effective and safe for one-way PPC slab beams. This research project will conduct the experimental and analytical investigation on the one-way shear behavior of PPC slab beams with respect to; i) shear span-to-depth (a/d) ratio, ii) shear reinforcement (none/minimum per code/reduced), iii) concrete strength (normal/high), iv) alternate shear reinforcement (welded wire reinforcement), and v) effect of bearing pad (punching shear). Shear provisions of existing design codes, especially AASHTO LRFD code, will be reevaluated through the experimental approach. Detailed analysis will be carried out to support the experimental observation and enhance the weak archival data encompassing unconsidered parameters. Finally, a rational shear design method will be established for the one-way PPC slab beams.
