Accurate and timely data are needed to assist in making effective decisions. The location of the group responsible for data in the state departments of transportation (DOT) organization and the activities it performs greatly influences how effective the DOT is in making decisions. This synthesis should determine how (DOTs) organize their data groups and the activities they perform to optimize resources and data utility. The objective of this study is to summarize and assess where data groups are located in state DOT organizations and their functions, their purposes, and their performance.
