Integration of Bus Stop Count Data with Census Data for Improving Bus Service

2010 gave rise to the 23rd decennial United States Census. The Census creates a golden opportunity for planners and researchers to refine the empirical basis for their population-based decisions. By delving into the demographics and characteristics of each of its markets, the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) and New Jersey Transit seek to understand the characteristics, and to improve the lives of, its stakeholders. NJDOT is looking for the guidance of a qualified team of fellow researchers and planners to assist them in identifying the changing transit ridership trends present in the 2010 Census. In this proposal the State University of New York at Albany Visualization And Informatics Lab (AVAIL) offers a perspective on demographic analysis. The project seeks to develop models that put these new data to work for the benefit of the State's people and economy; to develop a process that will effectively use technology to aid planning. This will cement the commitment of NJDOT to achieve the tech-forward ideas set forth in its Long-Range Transportation Plan and the Strategic Plan of the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT). Quickly and successfully updating transit plans to accommodate the constantly evolving ridership habits of its customers will set New Jersey apart as a leader in an increasingly agile and transparent governmental system. Awarding this contract to AVAIL will result in case studies of interstate cooperation and the higher-education system working closely with government entities to achieve the needs of our people.
