SPR-2237: Field Evaluation of Concrete Containing Disodium Tetrapropenyl Succinate (DSS)
Corrosion of reinforcing steel in concrete and the cost of repairing concrete in this condition has been a major problem for highway agencies throughout the United States. The delays caused by closing roads or bridges for rehabilitation also create additional costs when travel is restricted. Various materials have been used to try to prevent the corrosion of reinforcing steel and with varying degrees of success. A present method of coating the steel with an epoxy layer is expensive and any discontinuity of the epoxy from handling during construction creates a place for active corrosion to begin. The use of stainless steel reinforcing to eliminate corrosion has been investigated but is not practical from an economic standpoint. The need to further evaluate DSS in a field application is necessary to see if the benefits observed and documented in earlier laboratory studies (corrosion protection and freeze-thaw durability) can be duplicated in concrete poured in the field or at a fabrication plant. Long-term performance and the economics of the concrete with the DSS additive must be determined. The proposed research will study the field performance in F-Shape highway barriers of concrete containing a non-proprietary additive intended to reduce the concrete permeability, increase the passivity of the embedded steel, and provide air entrainment. The chemical additive is disodium tetrapropenyl succinate (DSS), which is a salt of an alkenyl-substituted succinic acid.
