Integrated Freight Network Model

This project is designed to create an integrated, geographic information system (GIS) based network model of the combined highway, rail, and inland waterways systems of Kentucky and West Virginia, and the bordering navigable waterways, including the Ohio River and potentially others. Raw data from USACE, West Virginia Department of Transportation , Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, and other stakeholders will be solicited, processed, and combined to create the first such integrated network for the region. Data from a complementary riverport survey process being conducted by the University of Louisville will be systematically incorporated into this system as well, to improve the quality of the overall network. Data from Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's Freight Network Model will be tested on this network to prototype modal substitution scenarios. If as other freight network data comes available, similar analysis will be conducted with partner institutions in the Multimodal Transportation and Infrastructure Consortium (MTIC).
