Statewide Overall CFRP Bridge Monitoring

Over the last two decades, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has deployed Carbon Fiber Composite Cable (CFCC) and other Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) materials in the construction of four bridges. As part of using this innovative material on projects, MDOT developed Experimental Work Plans as required by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). Part of these experimental work plans included long term monitoring for the purposes reporting performance information to FHWA. In addition, there are several bridges currently under construction or under consideration for design and construction using CFRP reinforcement. As CFRP is still considered an innovative material, the long-term performance of CFRP materials remains an outstanding area of investigation. Therefore, all Michigan built CFRP bridges have been instrumented with several sensors to capture responses such as strain, deflection, and internal temperatures caused by moving traffic and environmental changes as well. Continued monitoring of the CFR and CFRP elements in these bridges will provide critical information on the long term behavior of CFRP, which will allow for recommendations to be made for future designs and for the development of design guidelines for the state of Michigan taking into account the behavior of current field deployments. The proposed monitoring investigation will utilize the on-board sensors to create a complete profile for the long-term behavior of CFRP under typical Michigan traffic and environmental conditions. The product of this research will benefit MDOT and other state Departments of Transportation (DOTs) in their deployment of CFRP materials in field projects. This will promote the design and construction of bridges with longer lifespans and minimum maintenance costs.
