Great Lakes Maritime Region
The Department of Transportation (DOT), specified under the Office of the Secretary account Transportation Planning Research and Development appropriated $950,000 for the Great Lakes Maritime Research Institute. Funding is approved under the FY 2009 Consolidated Appropriations Act for the Fiscal Year Ending Sept 30, 2009, (Pub. L.111-8; Joint Explanatory Statement, Title I). The US Department of Transportation, Office of the Secretary, Under Secretary for Transportation Policy (OST-P) and Maritime Administration (MARAD) will collaborate with the Great Lakes Maritime Research Institute to complete research efforts in marine transportation, logistics, economics engineering, environmental planning and port management. The research study will be conducted under the direct management of MARAD; however, OST-P has the sole responsibility in meeting the legal requirements of the financial agreement. The Institute will conduct research and analyses on Great Lakes maritime issues that provide a resource to serve DOT, MARAD Great Lakes port authorities and communities and other Great Lake Stakeholders.
