Impact of Environmental Justice Analysis on Transportation Planning

The purpose of this study is to conduct a systems review to characterize the impacts of environmental justice (EJ) on transportation planning in the state departments of transportation (DOTs) and specifically in Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT). The results of this study will provide GDOT staff with the necessary information to demonstrate the specific ways in which Environmental Justice factors are being considered in the transportation planning and decision making process and the impacts that this has had on transportation planning, and to identify ways to improve the existing process to achieve (or exceed) best practice standards.

  • Supplemental Notes:
    • This research project has four main objectives as follows: 1) To examine how Environmental Justice factors are being considered in the transportation planning and decision making process at GDOT, 2) to examine how Environmental Justice factors are being considered in transportation planning and decision making in state DOTs and MPOs around the country, 3) to assess how EJ has impacted transportation planning since the Environmental Justice Executive Order was adopted, relative to the best practices for considering EJ in transportation planning in state DOTs and MPOs around the country, and 4) to develop and propose strategies for improving the current practice at GDOT.
