Innovative Bridge Research and Construction (IBRC) 2005

The deck of short span bridges is often supported on cast-in-place abutments that are supported by a pile driven system, known as an A5 sub-structure. The A5 sub-structure has been costly in comparison to other sub-structures for stream crossing structures in Wisconsin. In 2004, the A5 sub-structure slab bridges cost approximately $80 per square foot compared to all other types of slab bridges at approximately $50 per square foot. This excessive cost is another reason for investigating an alternate structure system for these bridges structures. The goal of this project is to design and construct an effective and efficient composite system of precast substructure elements and stay-in-place forms for super-structure for short span bridges to reduce the overall costs and risks of these structures in the state of Wisconsin. The results are expected to be applicable to future bridge structures.
