Writing a Land Transportation Textbook

The primary purpose of this textbook is to describe the functions and purposes of the land transportation systems, and how they relate to the "needs" of the shipping and traveling public. The book is divided into four sections. The first part looks at the objectives of transportation, how they are managed, and marketing systems and needs for the land transportation systems. The second and third sections cover the freight and passenger operating system for the rail and highway systems, and the function of the pipeline systems. The final segment looks at the potential for intra/intermodal system thinking and how it can benefit all facets of the complete transportation system. This text is intended to help students understand both the fundamental role and importance of land transportation in companies and in our society, and the complex environment in which land transportation service is provided today.
