HMA Longitudinal Joint Deterioration Investigation

The objective of this project is to review both good and poor performing notch-wedge longitudinal joints constructed in hot mix asphalt (HMA) pavements, determine if any conclusions can be made as to the possible causes of the deterioration and make recommendations for changes to the current Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) specifications to eliminate or reduce the deterioration. In 2005, WisDOT adopted a notch-wedge type joint as the standard method of constructing longitudinal joints in HMA pavements. This change was based on an internal WisDOT research project that determined that these joints performed best on a 10-year study. During the past few years, WisDOT has observed an increase in the occurrence of deterioration of the longitudinal joints on HMA pavements, especially during the first 3 years of the pavements' service life. This deterioration is leading to increased maintenance on these pavements and potentially a shortened service life.
