Impact of Heavy Vehicles on Early Pavement Distress of Asphalt Overlays

Perform analyses on field measurements to quantify the early pavement distresses on asphalt overlays and how these distresses are related to heavy truck traffic. One of the most common repair methods used is the asphaltic overlays of existing asphalt or concrete pavements. The conditions and distresses in these pavements vary considerably when they are chosen for overlay, and the amount and methods of pre-overlay repairs also vary widely. This lack of consistency in the pre-overlay repair leads to large variations in the performance of these asphaltic overlays, especially when the pavement is subjected to heavy truck traffic. This research will conduct field investigation on new overlay projects in Wisconsin. The research will (1) perform a comprehensive pre-overlay distress survey to identify and quantify distresses in each section, (2) perform field survey during surface treatment preparation to identify and quantify in the field the different types of surface treatments, and (3) perform pavement profile measurements before and after overlays. Pavement condition will be related to truck traffic levels.
