Toolbox for Strategic Truck Forecasting

This project will be a multiphase effort to develop a toolbox of methods for estimating truck flows on highways in US cities and on rural roads when doing project-level decision making. These tools differ radically from the conventional 4-step model that is used for most long-range metropolitan planning. Because the time-horizon for project planning is short, the tools need data which is readily available. However, there is a need to only forecast a few months or years into the future. Such tools lean heavily on statistical methods, principally time-series models and synthetic OD (origin-destination) table estimation. To facilitate this project University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) will leverage its participation in NCHRP Project 8-83, which will encompass traffic forecasting tools for trucks.
