Evaluation of Radar/CMS Trailer to Reduce Speeds in Work Zone
Can the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Radar/CMS trailers be used effectively to reduce speeds in work zones, and allow reduction in the need/use of COZEEP and MAZEEP. Automobiles and trucks regularly exceed the posted speed limit in Construction and Maintenance work zones, increasing risk of injury and death to workers, and damage to vehicles and equipment resulting from crashes in the zone. Caltrans currently employs CHP using COZEEP and MAZEEP to enforce the posted work zone speed limits. A more economical and effective means is needed to reduce traffic speeds in work zones.
