SEISMIC: Research Findings Synthesis Study - Phase I
Previously funded research projects addressed knowledge gaps in bridge systems performance through strategic research tasks taking advantage of new research approaches and techniques. Unfortunately, while this research effort benefited on-going retrofit projects at the time, it is difficult to assess how these advances have been archived for future designers, as well as to ensure this research is not repeated. Currently, a Research Note is developed that summarizes the problem, experimental results, findings and recommended changes to Caltrans design practice and guidelines after the research is complete. Unfortunately, there is over a decade of research for which this was not done and the Department is beginning to see examples where new research proposals and problem statements fail to recognize previous work and in some cases seek to repeat previously sponsored work.
