SEISMIC: Seismic Design of Column-Footing Connections with Pipe-Pin Hinges for Accelerated Bridge Construction
This Broad Announcement (BA) describes a general research topic in the area of Accelerated Construction of Transportation Systems of interest to the California Department of Transportation (Department). After the Loma Prieta Earthquake in 1989, the Department pursued a comprehensive and aggressive program of seismic research to increase public safety. In all cases, seismic retrofit has been directly based on and supported by extensive research and proof testing programs. This approach has allowed California to take a leadership role in terms of seismic bridge assessment and retrofit technology development and implementation. Experimental findings from this program eventually formed the basis for the current Seismic Design Criteria (SDC). The SDC, however is based on cast-in-place concrete and the Department is interested in adopting accelerated construction techniques that include the use of prefabricated components.
